ULUWATU
TEMPLE
|
Nestled on a
highland of Uluwatu subdistrict, Uluwatu Temple stands on a height of 70
meters above sea level. It is easily reached out from Jimbaran which is just
about 30 minutes drive by car. Uluwatu temple is one of the six directional
temples in Bali. It was built in the 11th century by renowned sage
Mpu Kuturan. Long after the building of the temple, Dang Hyang Nirartha came
to Bali and was amazed by the temple. He then expanded the temple by creating
Padmasana in that temple and meditated there on a stone until he vanished
which is called ‘Moksa’ in Hindus belief. The Moksa that he reached at that
time was a Parama Moksa which is vanishing without leaving any parts of body
in the world. The name of this temple was given from the stone where he was
sitting on and vanished (‘Ulu’ means top, and ‘watu’ means stones). It is
such a very nice story and the temple has become very famous up to now.
